Your Celebration | Civil Celebrant Gilliam Ferguson

“A child is a gift whose worth cannot be measured but by the heart.”

Naming ceremonies are a special celebration that not only welcomes the new member of the family, but also unites the family bonds.

The parents joy. The name given to your baby, celebrating the new life, unencumbered by life’s experience, bringing with it promises of magical things to come. For your naming ceremony I like to work with you to embrace the joy of the family union and unit.  To celebrate how a child without effort brings people closer together, mends rifts and is blessed with the innocence only a child can offer………

Many parents in our modern society are choosing to have a naming ceremony for their baby/child rather than a religious christening or baptism, as it allows the child to choose their own beliefs and values when they are older.

The aim of the naming ceremony is to formally welcome a child or children into the family and community of friends and other special people.

Popular times to have a naming ceremony are shortly after the baby’s birth or on the child’s first birthday as part of the celebrations. There are certainly no age limits to naming ceremonies and can include other children in the family who have not previously been given a naming ceremony.

It is a tradition for the parents to select mentors or guardians who they know will take a vested interest in and guide the child as they grow to adulthood.

I encourage participation of family members and special people in your lives during the ceremony through readings (religious if the parents choose) and poems especially chosen for the occasion. A tree planting, balloon release (with wish cards tied to them) or butterfly release can be a memorable way to include your guests. A wishing box is also a treasured keepsake that could be included.

Naming ceremonies are also a beautiful and significant way to welcome adopted children or step children into a family.

I am happy to offer ideas and suggestions to help make the day a moment in time that you, your family, and your friends will remember. A personalised certificate will be presented to you (signed by all involved) as well as a presentation copy of the service as a keepsake. I will also personally select a gift for your child as a memento of their special day.

Please feel free to contact me for further information and prices.

Double Trouble

Tom and Zoe although cousins, have personalities worlds apart, but are very much like twins in their attachment to one another.
As the parents are very close, they chose to have the naming ceremony together.
It is a family tradition to plant a tree when a new family member comes in to the fold, and the naming ceremony was an ideal time to continue with this tradition.
We created the ceremony around the symbolism of the new tree, and its growth through its life, and comparing it with the life of these beautiful babies!
